Laugh With Math

How can we "Laugh With Math"?

Laugh With Math

The concept is simple. Take a topic such as mathematics - which can be very challenging - and turn it into something fun!

What makes Creative Tutoring unique is that it goes beyond simply conveying mathematical concepts and definitions, preparing for an exam, or completing a homework assignment. By getting to know what interests your child, we provide creative lessons tailor-made to spark that interest and rouse your child’s curiosity. As a result, your child will be inspired to become actively engaged in what is being taught. And, yes, humor plays a large part in sustaining that spark.

Does your child like sports? Any sport that involves passing an object, such as a ball, invites a detailed analysis of geometric angles, arcs, and curves. An NBA point guard whose main responsibility is to get the ball to his teammates is actually illustrating the Distributive Property of Algebra. The flight path of a shot taken in an NBA game is a perfect example of a Parabola (Quadratic Function). Even the simple act of keeping score lends itself to basic pre-algebra ratio/proportion concepts (e.g. - If LeBron scores 8 points in the first quarter, how many will he score in the entire game?).

A bouncing ball can demonstrate exponential equations, an overhead look at a pool table shows how vectors work, a shadow on a computer screen illustrates similar figures, a simple purchase of sale-priced jeans can be used to teach percentage discount and tax calculations, and a typical eye exam can explain what a dilation is. I’ve even used Stewie (the baby from Family Guy) to illustrate the concept of an ellipse (seriously..... his head is a perfect elliptical shape).

There are so many real-life scenarios that can be applied when teaching mathematical concepts. Creative Tutoring goes beyond “the book” by simplifying the language and using humor to make mathematics more relatable and easier to understand.

And we hope your child enjoys Laughing (a little) With Math!
