Getting into your college of choice and/or getting as much scholarship funding as possible…….. That’s what this is all about. Though some colleges are now “test optional”, those schools are still swayed by a student transcript that contains a high exam score versus one that doesn’t contain a score at all. Also, scholarship sources such as Bright Futures and Merit Based Scholarships, rely heavily on these exam scores. The question you and your parents are facing is whether or not to invest a few thousand dollars preparing for these exams so that your score will earn you TENS of thousands of dollars you can apply towards your college education...
This is eighth grade level math, the final year before you begin to earn High School Credit that goes on your College Transcript. Core number skills are learned and practiced in this year. Skills such as working with mixed numbers and (gulp!) fractions. Order of Operations (remember PEMDAS?). Decimals and percentages. Greatest Common Factor (GCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM). Solving and evaluating basic algebraic equations and inequalities. You will also be introduced to higher level graphing and data analysis.
This is the year the numbers begin to turn into letters!! No worries, we've got this covered!
The first year of High School Credit Math builds on your Pre-Algebra knowledge, and adds more complex equations including those with multiple variables. The lines on the graphs you worked with last year (slope-intercept form ring any bells?), now become curves and equations to the second power that need to be factored. Functions, exponents, operations with radicals, are all covered in this year.
This is really the core year of your Mathematics career. All of your future math classes have some basis in what you will learn in this all important year! This is where you will learn to solve multi-step numerical problems using sequential thought.
Many of the numbers you studied through your Pre-Algebra year, turned into letters (variables) in Algebra last year. Now, those variables turn into WORDS and shapes (what?). All shapes, two and three dimensional, and their properties will be studied, as well as the concept of similarity and congruency.
However, the most important skill you're going to learn this year is sequential, multi-step problem solving using logic and reasoning. Trust me, those who can take a complicated situation, make sense of it, and come up with a viable solution are very valuable in everyday life.
