The College entrance exams (SAT and ACT) cover grade level years 8-11 (Pre-Algebra through Algebra 2) with a sprinkle of Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus mixed in. Many students take these exams toward the end of their Junior or beginning of their Senior year in High School. That means that the material being covered can range as far back as four years ago. Although each year of mathematical learning builds upon the last, students must often dig DEEP into their memory banks and review ancient history that was learned before they hit puberty!
Creative Tutoring will take the time to learn your child's learning style to develop a personalized lesson plan that will have them recall this material as efficiently and effectively as possible.
This is eighth grade level math, the final year before your child begins to earn High School Credit that goes on their College Transcript. Core number skills are learned and practiced in this year. Skills such as working with mixed numbers and (gulp!) fractions. Order of Operations (remember PEMDAS?). Decimals and percentages. Greatest Common Factor (GCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM). Solving and evaluating basic algebraic equations and inequalities. They will also be introduced to higher level graphing and data analysis.
This is the year the numbers begin to turn into letters!! No worries, we've got this covered!
The first year of High School Credit Math builds on your child's Pre-Algebra knowledge, and adds more complex equations including those with multiple variables. The lines on the graphs they worked with last year now become curves and equations to the second power that need to be factored. Functions, exponents, operations with radicals, are all covered in this year.
This is really the core year of a student's Mathematical career. All of their future math classes have some basis in what is learned in this all important year! This is where they will learn to solve multi-step numerical problems using sequential thought.
Many of the numbers studied through the Pre-Algebra year turned into letters (variables) in Algebra last year. Now, those variables turn into WORDS and shapes (what?). All shapes, two and three dimensional, and their properties will be studied, as well as the concept of similarity and congruency.
However, the most important skill your child is going to learn is sequential, multi-step problem solving using logic and reasoning. (Parents, do you remember doing Proofs?) Trust me, those who can take a complicated situation, make sense of it, and come up with a viable solution, are very valuable individuals in everyday life.
After a year of shapes, logic and abstract visual concept learning, numerical concepts return during this school year. Systems of equations and inequalities, function analysis, matrix operations, series and sequences, imaginary numbers (yes, you can have a square root of a negative number), quadratic functions, polynomial functions, logarithms and conic sections (parabolas, hyperbolas, circles and ellipses) are all covered in great detail this year.
We've taught, tutored and lesson-planned for it all!
